• Virtual machine

From Newtype Len@21:2/148 to All on Wed May 22 20:08:00 2024
Last month I downloaded a game off of Steam called Shogo: Mobile Armor Division. I always meant to play it when it was new in 1998, but a lot of things just got in the way these last 26 years.

I didn't anticipate this, but Steam just sold a game that wasn't programmed
to work on a modern machine. Someone out there made some patches that can get it to run on modern hardware, but my computer is just too modern to handle 1998. I had a problem with Blade Runner not generating targets in the target range because my clock speed was too fast for the software to recognize, but this is a whole different league.

The only real solution is to set up a virtual machine and run it off of that. I'm savy enough with computers to do this, but I wanted to go outside of my expertise and learn what you need to do to setup and run a virtual machine. Have any of you done it before, and what would I need to get started?

Most VM solutions will have guides that explain how to install a guest OS, I imagine from the age of the game you'll be wanting to use Win98?

Also worth considering is that Dosbox-x can run Win 98 (see the wiki for instructions dosbox-x.com/wiki/Home) for instructions. Also can emulate a 3dfx card for 3d, soundbaster for sound ect. Its all pretty well described on the wiki.

Not sure how you are going to get you game installed in the VM though, usually one get's and .ISO image for the original intall & mounts that as CD in the VM (dosbox can do that too) - but I don't think your steam version will have come with the original CD or an ISO. you'll need to look for that, try searching archive.org for it.

If you were wanting to try a virtual machine, VirtualBox would be a simple and easy solution, however I do not think this would work for you as simple virtual machines would still be based on fairly current hardware.
I would suggest trying PCemu of 86Box, as it would actually emulate the older hardware. The downloads from theirs sites do not include the bios's but they are simple enough to find.

I don't like virtual machines much for gaming.

I see the game requires 3D graphics card compatible with DirectX 7 (DirectX 9 recommended). 3D graphics in virtual machines have a tendency to suck.

Steam's page suggests the game ought to be compatible with modern systems so you should ask their tech support for options rather than attempting your own hacks.

If you want to try with virtual machine, you could grab VirtualBox and see how it goes. You might have to enable 3D acceleration
