• Announcing AmiDeb - An Amiga Emulator system.

From vorlon@21:1/195.1 to All on Fri Jul 22 23:28:29 2022
    AmiDeb has been released.

    What is AmiDeb:

AmiDeb is a bare Linux install with just enough to run FS-UAE.

At the end of the installation of AmiDeb you have a real Debian Linux
system, with the benefit of being able to update and customise the system.

Mounting of a real CD-Rom/DVD from the host is supported. (See A3000
    config.)

As AmiDeb uses FS-UAE, all features of FS-UAE on Linux are
    available.

Mounting of real Amiga formatted Hard drives.

Tools on the Linux side: nano (Editor), mc (Midnight Commander [File
    Manager]), linux network tools.

Runing a Text based front end, FS-UAE is then launched for your Amiga experience.

I thought that I'd release to to the public to also use...

Oh, interesting - mind delving into these a bit? I have an amithlon box that I frankly don't have set up right now to do anything and it merely has a base install with no real updates lol. I don't even have any software on the thing other than the base amithlon install.

I'd be curious to see what types of issues you're running into on amithlon...in my experience, it seems to work rather well.

AmiDeb is potentially of interest for running in a VPS. In fact, it's /very/ interesting to run in a VPS. :) Are you on Discord? Perhaps we can chat and see if this is possible?

Binkd won't work on my Amithlon system. It bitches about a function
that's not present. I'm also stuck with a RealTeck 8109 pci network card.
I've tried four intel based card that's meant to work, but couldn't get
    it to.

I haven't been able to get sound going. (Not that a BBS really needs
    that).

Every now and again, I have to do a hard power reboot of the pc. But
mostly just re-booting Amithlon is enough.

AmiDeb is potentially of interest for running in a VPS. In fact, it's
/very/ interesting to run in a VPS.

The issue with running it in a VPS is present with all *uae* versions, in
that the mouse goes nuts and as Amiga user's know, a working mouse is a
    must.

Doing something like this is as close to bare metal as anyone is going to
get. The plus side is more host machine compatibility, unlike Amithlon.

No I haven't mentioned it. AmiDeb uses the debian net installer .iso and
it's abilities to be scripted, so it won't work on a Pi.

Hmmm would want to make an ISO thats self contained so it would require the internet. Mainly because it would be cool to take places like the cabin where internet isn't used. The cool thing is the ISO doesn't have to fit on a disk itself because it can occupy the space of the USB flash drive.

So if I'm understanding correctly its an install script only? If yes how much space does it take up after installation without any personal additions?

Hmmm would want to make an ISO thats self contained so it would
require the internet. Mainly because it would be cool to take places
like the cabin where internet isn't used. The cool thing is the ISO

The only time the internet is required is during the install, as it pulls
down the latest versions of programs/libs etc...

So if I'm understanding correctly its an install script only? If yes
how much space does it take up after installation without any personal additions?

No, the install of AmiDeb is scripted to do 98% of the install. It only
asks things like hostname/domain, Locale/Lang, it chooses "Guided" for
the hd partition's, but they can be changed. At the end it powers the pc
    down.

Then when the pc boot's up, it presents a txt based menu system all ready
to go, and just needing the kickstart rom's, any adf, and hdf files to
    have a working emulation machine.

The iso is 491Mb when unziped, and is only ziped to allow the inclusion
    of documentation.

    Yes and no. #0(

I had to purchase a "kit" to get it. The Pi, PSU, Case, SD Card, HDMI
    cable, all in one transaction.

Oh, this was the cable at fault. Two other cables purchased locally work
fine. It also was not working with a Asus monitor and two different TV's,
    and two different pi's... *&%^%$

At least the unit for the client is isnstalled and working displaying the information in full screen 1920x1080 as it should, and no bits cut off.

    Hi Blue White,

Putting it on a BBS didn't even cross my mind. @-O)
Plus the only reason it's a zip archive is to include the
documentation and mounting a real hd howto...

Could you email me at "[email protected]". There might be someting secret comming!! &->
