So, I've had my IP from Xfinity for almost 12 years unchanged. Wake up this morning before I left for work? Guess what, it changed. Hope it STAYS what it is ... had to scurry and update my domain name to point to the new addy before I left. Sigh. Why can't people leave shit alone? :)

I'm spending about $120CDN per month for fiber with a static IP...

    Lucky You ..
Since I moved to Fiber from Cable, I can have 3-5 IP changes in a day while their servers load-balance.

I'll NEVER go back to cable again... cut the cord close to 10 years ago.

I have enough OTA / IPTV channels to play for "background noise" if needed.

w0w; thats interesting - I use Xfinity, too... hope that doesn't point to something they'll be doing m0re often.

One time they turned off my WiFi b/c it was named ITHURTSWHENIP - they literally turned off my DNS and messed up the BBS and my whole home network over it - I didn't even know they would monitor the NAME of the SSID. Weird!

That's such bullshit. But I think I found my issue for net2bbs not working, as port 23 would just die for no reason. I get a ton of power off's for like 2 seconds, and apartently this netgear router got screwed up somehow. I finally broke down and unplugged modem and router since my wife was telling me some sites weren't displaying on her phone.

Plugged everything back on, no internet from the router. Had to leave it unplugged for anot 5 minutes and reboot it 2 more times before it "fixed" itself. So far, since it's done that, no port23 issues.

w0w; thats interesting - I use Xfinity, too... hope that doesn't point to something they'll be doing m0re often.

I'm thinking maybe that's why my IP changed ... the router screwed up so bad and they thought it was new of offline for too long. ?!?!?

Its possible your v4 IP broke but v6 IP's were working. Not every site is
on V6 yet.. a good test is to ping google via v4 and v6 and see if you get no reponse from the V4 IP. Xfinity is a dual-stack provider, much like my ISP,
and I've seen this exact issue here.

I'm thinking maybe that's why my IP changed ... the router screwed up

Could also be they had a messed up DHCP server, or moved your cable node to
a different "CMTS" (cable router), which would cause you to get an IP out of
    a different subnet.

Same for fibre for me, but getting a partner discount on my internet connection so its 2.5 gb fibre but don't really need a static IP. I used cable when I first moved into this building because it was the only thing that was "high speed" at that time then switched to copper DSL when speeds increased and then when my ISP opened up fibre I switched in a heartbeat :)

I'm basically running a hosting company out of my tiny apartment so there is a compelling need for addressing that never changes. It would be a tough-sell
to go back to cable or DSL now, thats for sure. Both of those used to flake out at random resulting in wonderful phonecalls while on holidays.

I keep meaning to ask you via email. With your fiber connection do you
run the bhell "modem" or did you switch to something else? I only ask
because downloading is throttled on my bhell fibe connection. When I
run speed test sites it's great! Just what I pay for. LOL

Nope I replaced that pile of shit "modem" with something else but still get throttled. But not as bad as Robbers.
