    Yep, came from my system.

There was a brief window where the tagline wasn't setup correctly (I've just rebuilt the system on Linux from the Windows Server 2003 server it was running on before) but that's now been corrected!

Yup, but we didn't call BBS computers "servers" back in the day. BBSes were (mostly) just run on someone's PC that may be rebooted or powered off or used for other purposes at any time. The term "server" at the time was more widely used to refer to system dedicated to provide a specific type of physical resource ("file server", "print server", "modem server"). Even early Internet servers (mail, FTP, Gopher, etc.) were usually just called "hosts", not servers.

Sysop is pretty much a BBS-only thing, odd since it harkens back to an
old mainframe role. I've never been called a sysop at work before.

The origins of the word Sysop (or SysOp) predate BBSes, but definitely fell out of favor for those "other" uses (i.e. mainframe operators) during the BBS era.

I have worked at a business with a mainframe for 25+ years now. The only person I ever remember being called a sysop was the guy who used to run the dial-up bbs that was taken down about the time I started working there.

They announced that he was the former sysop at his retirement. IIRC, I
think the BBS ran Opus or something like it.

But I have heard that is where the term comes from. ;)

The admin/power level login in OS/400 was called QSYSOPR, I recall

Everyone was more or less local too. I met some of my real life best friends by posting messages like this and then meeting up in real life.

While there's a lot the current incarnation of BBSes has to offer, the
dial-up era was pretty nice, for what you mention. We had a local
othernet called NIRVANAnet, and we'd arrange get-togethers at least
quarterly. You'd get to meet the people you were arguing with
face-to-face, hang out and drink/eat with people you liked, share bits
about your real life with others, and occasionally meet and date someone
    you'd met through the BBS.

There were a lot more local topics discussed and more local messages,
which gave BBSes an individual personality some lack now. In 1991,
during Desert Storm, BBSes were an interesting uncensored view of the
    protests in San Francisco.

I don't miss busy signals, though. Now, you telnet into a specific BBS
and expect to get in. Back then, you'd set up a handful of BBSes into a
dialing queue and connect to whichever answered first after dozens or
hundreds of busy signals. Anyone with a roommate learned the Hayes
command to turn the speaker off!

Yup, but we didn't call BBS computers "servers" back in the day.
BBSes were (mostly) just run on someone's PC that may be rebooted
or powered off or used for other purposes at any time.

I should have called my BBS back in the '90s the "Conspiracy Server".

Sysop is pretty much a BBS-only thing, odd since it harkens back to an
old mainframe role. I've never been called a sysop at work before.

Hey, I remember that now! We had an OS/400 at the place I worked before

The weird thinga bout that place was that a whole lot of the daily order and inventory processing got done on a "Baby/36" and another system that were both running on PCs. The results got loaded to the OS/400. I think what it was mostly used for was generating reports and some other misc tasks.

It didn't really occur to me at the time, but that seems rather backwards
and a waste of processing power. Data entry was done on a separate server
and was loaded to the "Baby/36" for processing.

I started bbsing in the early 90s and RUNNING a bbs in early to mid 90s.
mid 90s was when the web was taking off and we were losing people to the web/internet.

This time period is usually called 'the third wave' and it was suprisingly very active, maybe even more than years before.

If you have a sysop who's in his mid 40s like me, they are a mid wave sysop.

I started my system when the bbses in my area started to dwindle and I ended up running one of the more popular bbses in my region despite only having one phone line. there was one around me that had multiple lines and provided internet access, but they shut down.

I never really wanted to be a sysop but I knew there was a hole to fill and I really met a lot of great people through bbses. On my bbs my users were my friends, and that is something you don't really get in the telnet age of bbses. we all ended up being actual friends and some of us met in groups or just other types of meetups.

    You don't say size-tem.. :)

I agree, but we might be wrong.

It was one of the strangest things I heard when I talked to people in real life. I heard them say sizeop, and I kept saying wouldn't it be siss as in System? Folks in the sizeop category always claimed it was correct phonetically. In fact if you look up sysop pronunciation it says sai * suhp.

Indeed it was "siss". And where I am, I'd never heard anyone say "size-op".. Always "siss-op" or "sye-sop".

Sysops were "all powerful" and so yeah, I and most kids desired to become one.

When I started running a BBS (1994), I knew a few kids at school who knew what a BBS was, but it seemed not very many knew about them. I was telling one of my friends (who was familiar with computers) about it when I started mine, and he said "What's a BBS?"

At the same time, I did have one or two friends who called it a few times. And there was one kid who I think even said he went to my high school, but I hadn't met him in person. We played a lot of Doom over the modem in the summer of 1995 though, sometimes until around 4:00 or 5:00 in the morning..

we had a sysop named dr death. when we found out his real name, i saw him in highschool. this guy was the biggest fat dork in the school. fat, dirty, had curley blonde hair afro.

Online he acted like mr cool. like online he acted like he had to carry around his nuts in a wheel barrel.

He even kicked me off several times just for no reason after insulting me. he did that with other users too. probably because he only had one computer.
years later he called my telnet bbs and i bunted his ass off just for kicks.

i see him on fb. he probably is less of a dick now. https://i.imgur.com/E0V1ACF.png

but back to the 90s... back then not everyone was online
not everyone had a computer in the home. things were different.

america online changed that because it was essentially a main stream bbs.

Hey, I remember that now! We had an OS/400 at the place I worked before

is OS/400 a os? is it like OS/2?

Yes, sort of. I said we had an "OS/400," but that is not correct. The
machine is an IBM AS/400 and the OS it runs is OS/400. OS/400 is the
operating system that IBM designed for the AS/400 line.

The AS/400 is a line of machines used mostly by businesses, schools, and government agencies that was a step or two below a mainframe. So it had a
lot more power than a desktop machine and allowed multiple users like a mainframe.

I would not doubt that someone somewhere has managed to emulate OS/400
on a PC, like they have earlier mainframe OSes, but OS/400 is mostly going
to be found on AS/400 equipment, and the newer equipment that IBM created
    to replace those machines.

I think my desire to become one stemmed from thinking that BBSes were neat and also wanting to pull in more echo areas than were available locally. This would have been 1988 where everything was still dial-up.

I also wanted to learn more about computers and that was a good way to

Maybe they meant running a BBS? Having a dedicated computer and phone
line was expensive. I'm surprised I could justify having a phone line
for the BBS when I started out, as I wasn't making a lot back then. The
computer was a cast-off from work.

One benefit of running a BBS was being able to be on message networks
and collect files without having to call out and run the risk of LD
charges or ul/dl ratios. You could let the BBS do all the calling for
you, and people would upload files *to* you for a change!

i miss as400. i still put it on my resume.

I have put it on mine also, even though my interactions with it were much
less than others in my shop. I was the primary operator of the "Baby/36"
and the other PC based system, both of which probably could have better
used the power of an AS400.

nothing is correct in the english language. did you ever see gallagher's act? ---

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxnipgv4cZM

I like this version of that skit better: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mfz3kFNVopk

And George Carlin had a lot of good skits on English too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11lEtj-MuMk

gallagher was a real interesting guy. pbs had a biography on him and it really went deep into his childhood and young adult years. then it went into the trouble he had with his brother and it said his whole family sided with the brother. i can not find it online anywhere.

    Huh? Most BBS's are free?

True, I just meant the hardware and phone costs.
I was in rural Australia during that era so it was very hard to find people interested in computers and even just finding computers and accesories was difficult. Things got easier once IBM compatibles became mainstream.
Maybe it was just me, I really never felt comfortable talking to people and was just happy to talk to the computer.

For me, I almost immediately wanted to host one once I started calling aroun

My first computer was a Tandy 1000HX with a modem. I immediately wanted to run a BBS and it kinda started there on a floppy. It's probably for all the same reasons others mentioned. Sysop didn't seem legit until US Robotics offered a buy one get one free deal on the HST Dual Standard modems. After that being a sysop seemed legit :)

they had an arrangement where the real one gave his brother SOME permission
to do SOME things, and identify himself as not being the real gallagher.
then he just kept doing it.

i wouldn't be surprised if he's doing it now since his brother is dead.
i tried looking into him and he didn't do anything notable except an appearance in a 2012 documentary within reach.

he could probably go to china and do the act.

The area where I live had a local BBS list that someone maintained monthly in text format, and it was passed around to the various BBSes here. There was also a local free computer magazine that could often be found in convenience stores, some grocery stores, and the library, and they had a section for BBS ads toward the back. I had advertised my BBS in there for a while.

I looked at adding a regular modem line to the house a few years
back and they still wanted to charge you for a buinsess line to run
a bbs on a phone. Of course now its way easier to just put one
online with a VM from AWS. It probalby costs less than $10 a month
    now.

If you're interested in a phone line for your BBS, check out voip.ms - They're fairly easy to set up and are not very expensive: https://voip.ms/residential

I wonder if many people pay attention to grocery store bulletin boards these days. People might first think about looking for such information online on their phone.

That's just it.. Maybe it would interest the kind of people that WOULD look at one of those boards. I mean, nobody looks there for specific things, you just look to see what othes have posted.

I'll say. I worked at a company that had a main office in London. We
were in San Francisco. We didn't have a lot of voice traffic between
the offices, so I negotiated a pretty reasonable rate at the time - I
think it was 18 cents a minute.

This was back in the days when slamming was common. A LD provider would
contact your local exchange carrier and switch your lines without
authorization, then bill them at exorbitant rates - to the tune of
    $1.99/minute.

I noticed that my preferred vendor's bill had dropped and a new bill
for 10 times the amount showed up and must have gone through 10 hours
of my time on the phone to get a refund. I was pissed at this point and
didn't care how long it took, since it cost them, too.

All the carriers did this, so no one was singled out and they could all
claim billing/clerical errors and hope that people gave up looking for
    refunds.

Welcome to my BBS Dizzy, and hello world! to everyone else!

There's a Youtube channel I've been super enjoying lately called "Usagi Electric".

This guy is AMAZING, he rebuilds and reverse engineers old computers and electronics, and one of the more amusing quirks of his, due to a bug in (I THINK!) his work trying to reverse engineer a Wang word processor he'd found, was that in trying to write the assembly language to print "Hello, World!" he ended up instead printing "Hellorld" and so from then on any time he wants to do a test print it's "Hellorld" instead :)

Great stuff. Lately he's been, among other things, resuscitating a Bendix vacuum tube computer from the 1950s.

I've quite liked the videos he did on the Ti99/4, I really felt for him when he was troubleshooitng the Ti99! Yes, there really is no good argument in favor of "Sise-op". It's
    "siss-op" for sure.

I'm with you on the GIF one too, I've always pronounced it as GIF (with
a hard G sound) rather than "JIF". But I have a vague memory of
somebody who matters (the author of the GIF format, perhaps?) saying it
was pronounced "JIF". And, the "G" can be pronounced that way (as in
the animal "Giraffe" for example). However, I do and will continue to pronounce it with a hard G. ;-)

When I first started BBSing and I saw "sysop" and didn't know what it meant, I thought it was "sigh-sop" because of the Y.. But then I learned it's short for "system operator" and its proper pronunciation.

As far as GIF, most of the people I've known pronounce it like "JIF", so that's just how I've pronounced it. And I've heard the creator of the GIF format says that's the way to pronounce it.

I don't know why some people get so upset about how GIF is pronounced.. English tends to be an inconsistent language. For instance, why is the word "vineyard" typically pronounced "vin-yeerd" rather than like the two separate words "vine" "yard"?

the G in gif is graphics which is hard G.

since a few years later there is Jif graphics format and he was STILL trying to get people to say gif and jif just makes him even more ridiculious.

now we're stupid for still talking about it.

    those... It's SysOp and GIF.

Supposedly the creator of the format says it's pronounced "JIF". He's obviously a nut bar.

Lots of inventors have been wrong about their inventions. The slinky was meant to stabilize equipment on ships. Frisbees were pie containers. Play-Doh was made to clean wallpaper.

The GIF guy was wrong about how it's pronnounced. :)

yeah he was wrong from the start. 'graphics' = hard G

Acronyms are pronounced by convention, not based on the pronounciation of the words that inspire the initialism. For example, CIM (Common Information Model) is pronounced "sim" not "kim".

The inventors pronounced GIF as "jiff", then in my book, "jiff" is right. No debate about it.

The Qt inventors apparently switched the pronounciation from "cue-tee" to "cute" at some point. So I'm trying (hard) to follow suit.
